Chester is an interesting city set in the county of Cheshire on the River Dee and close to the border with Wales. Interesting because it has a very long history, dating back to it’s origin as a Roman fort in 79 AD and was one of the main army camps of Roman Britain. It later became a large settlement and was one of the last cities to hold against the invasion of the Normans. William the Conqueror ordered that a castle be built here as a strategic move due to Chester’s proximity to the Welsh border.
